_Welcome to the mystery world of Reason…
“Cap, you can’t do this!” I say screaming.
“I don’t want to hear it detective.” Captain Philip says.
“But I helped with the kid.” I say, “Those two would have never gotten him to talk.”
“And the city of Miami thanks you, detective.” Cap says, “Now leave.”
Captain walks away before I can protest. “I can’t believe this.” I say.
“Look, I’ll try to talk to him.” Steve says, “But this is serious. Blackouts are nothing to play with. Someone could have gotten really hurt.”
“I know.” I say. I no longer have the energy to argue.
“First we need to get you to that doctor’s appointment. Then we’ll get psych to clear you.” Steve says.
“Whatever. I quit.” I say. Steve looks at me and says nothing. “So you don’t care if I quit? Is that it?”
“The only thing you might love more than sex is this job, so no, I don’t take your threat seriously.” Steve says.
“I really hate you.” I say.
“I love you too cousin.” Steve says.
“How are you so sure we’re related? Your dad was a bit of a rolling leaf.” I say.
“Don’t you mean a rolling stone?” Steve says.
“No.” I say. “He wasn’t stable enough to be a stone.”
Steve and I both laugh. “Alright, goof ball, glad to see you’re feeling better.” Steve says. “See you later.”
I drive home and turn on the T.V. There is nothing good on and all I can think about is the case; the case that I should be working on. Although it makes me upset I know I really should have seen someone about the blackouts. I text the psychiatrist and see if she can fit me in tomorrow. The sooner I get cleared the sooner I can go back to work. I walk over to the fridge and see what I have to eat. I know I have nothing. I always have nothing. Maybe I’ll order pizza…or Chinese. I finally decide to order pizza and Chinese. When the food gets here I eat while I watch reruns of Fresh Prince of Bell Air. This was my favorite show growing up. Afterwards I decide to call one of my girls. It’s been way too long since I’ve had sex.
“Hey Mindy, what are you doing baby?” I say.
“Hello? Who is this? John is that you?” Mindy says.
“You know it’s me beautiful.” I say, “What are you doing tonight? Why don’t you come over, I miss you.”
“I haven’t heard from you in 4 months and now you’re calling me.” Mindy says.
“I know I’m so sorry about that.” I say, “You know with this job, I get so busy sometimes. But there wasn’t a day that went by that I didn’t think about you.”
“You are such a liar. If you think I’m gonna fall for your games, you’re crazy.” Mindy says.
“Baby, what games? You know you’re the only one I’ve ever wanted.” I lie, “If I didn’t feel so obligated to keep this city safe for you, I would quit and marry you right now.”
“Don’t say that if you don’t mean it John.” Mindy says.
“I mean it baby. You know how I feel about you.” I say.
“So why don’t you want to move in together?” Mindy asks.
“Why don’t you come over and we can talk about it?” I say.
“You want me to come over right now?” Mindy asks.
“Right now.” I say.
“Okay, I’ll be right over.” Mindy says, “But John, can I sleep over this time? I know about your stupid rule, but if we’re going to be living together then you should at least let me sleep over once in a while.”
“On one condition.” I say.
“What?” Mindy asks.
“You have to let me do whatever I want to you.” I say.
“John you’re so nasty.” Mindy says, “Okay deal.”
“Say it.” I say.
“Detective Gray, you can do whatever you want to me.” Mindy says.
I hang up the phone and get ready. Mindy comes over wearing sexy lingerie. “Did you walk out of the car like that?” I ask in shock. I’m not sure why I am shock she is one of my freakiest girls.
“What happen? You don’t like it?” Mindy says.
“I love it. Turn around.” I say. Mindy does a slow 360. She is the thickest Asian I have ever been with. “Come here.”
“First I want to talk about us moving in together?” Mindy says.
Just like a woman to want to “talk” while half naked. They really don’t understand men at all. Mindy starts talking and I slowly take off my clothes until I am completely naked. She is still talking, not getting my hints at all. I walk towards her and she walks backwards till she reaches the wall. I grab her by her waist and turn her around so she is facing the wall.
“John, listen to me. This is serious.” Mindy says.
“Keep talking, I’m listening to every word.” I say.
I begin to kiss her neck while my hands roam her body. I touch her spot and she screams. Finally she stops talking. We have sex multiple times and by the time we are done she is fast asleep. Thank goodness because I am too tired to think of a reason why we are not moving in together.
The next morning I wake up and she is making breakfast. Oh boy. She’s playing house, this isn’t good.
“Good morning husband.” Mindy says.
What the… “Mindy, you’re up early.” I say.
“How’d you sleep baby?” Mindy asks, “I have breakfast ready.”
“Yeah, right. I have a doctor’s appointment this morning.” I say. “I’m actually running late. So just lock the door when you leave okay.”
“John?” Mindy says, “Are you serious?”
“What?” I say.
“I don’t know why I thought this time would be different.” Mindy says.
I’m not sure either. “I don’t know what you mean, but I really have to go, if I’m more than twenty minutes late they cancel the appointment and then I have to wait weeks to reschedule.”
“Okay, so I’ll wait for you. It’s just a doctor’s appointment. It can’t take that long.” Mindy says.
“Right. Well the thing is it’s actually a psychiatry appointment so it might take a while.” I say as I walk to the door.
“Those appointments only last one hour John.” Mindy says with her hands on her hips.
“Normally yes, but this is mandated by Captain so I can’t leave till I’m cleared to go back to work.” I say. “But anyway, I really can’t stay, bye.”
I hurry out the door. What is it that makes a woman believe a guy will change when he says and does the same thing he has always said and done? This obviously works in my favor, but this phenomenon really intrigues me. I think if I would have stayed in the PhD program I may have done my dissertation on it.
I arrive at the psychiatrist and sign in. I am talking to the new secretary when the doc comes out and says, “John, why don’t you leave my secretary alone and come inside.” Dr. B says.
“Hey long time no see.” I say as I walk into her office.
“Have a seat John.” Dr. B says, “Before we start I just want to say cut the bullshit and take this seriously. If I don’t believe what you are saying you will never wear that badge again.”
“Damn, good morning to you too. Is that what they taught you, to blackmail your patients?” I say.
“I’m giving you one chance. Do not waste my time.” Dr. B says.
“You really need to get laid.” I say.
“And we’re done.” Dr. B says getting up.
“Okay, okay I’m sorry. I was just kidding…kind of.” I say, “What do you want to know Dr. Brax” I say.
“Why don’t you start with the blackouts?” Dr. B says.
“They started when I got back. I can’t really tell you much because I don’t know what happens, I just find myself somewhere and I think I’ve just arrived but people tell me I’ve been there for hours. They say I’ve done things I can’t remember doing.” I say.
“Like having sex with the medical examiner, Marcy.” Dr. B says bluntly.
“Well damn, if you know everything, why are we having this conversation?” I ask angrily.
“How many times has this happened?” Dr. B says.
“I don’t know. A few times.” I respond.
“Are you drinking?” Dr. B says.
“I told you, I haven’t had a drink since I’ve been back.” I say.
“Tell me about that.” Dr. B says, “In this six hell game, you guys were forced fed alcohol is that right?”
“Yes.” I say.
“What else did they make you guys do?” Dr. B asks.
“I’m sure you read the file.” I say.
“Talking about it will help you.” Dr. B says.
“I’m sure you believe that.” I say.
“Do you want on this case or not?” Dr. B says.
“You want me to tell you everything? That will take forever.” I say.
“Tell me the tasks they made you do that affected you the most?” Dr. B says.
“Nothing they made me do “affected” me. What affected me is losing my partner.” I say.
“I understand you and Lucy were very close. How did it feel to lose her?” Dr. B says.
“Like shit.” I say.
“Anything else?” Dr. B
“What else is there?” I say.
“Well maybe, you feel like it’s your fault that she died.” Dr. B says.
“And why would I feel like that?” I ask.
“It was very clear that Lucy didn’t want to complete the last challenge. She said so in her report. She felt as if there was something off about this whole six hell game and she wanted to pull out. She said she expressed this to you, but you talked her into going through with it.” Dr. B says.
I look at Dr. B. If I could reach over there and strangle her and not lose my badge I would. “Sounds like you have it all figured out. Are we done here?” I say.
“John, I don’t mean to be insensitive, but you must face your guilt or it will never go away.” Dr. B says.
“I’m doing fine thank you.” I say.
“By having sex with random women and drowning yourself with work? When was the las time you had a good night sleep?” Dr. B asks.
“Last night.” I say.
“Really? Were you alone?” Dr. B asks.
“What relevance does that have?” I ask.
“I think we both know.” Dr. B says.
“Are we done?” I ask.
“Tell me about your obsession with Rebecca?” Dr. B says. “I know she was the accomplice you guys were looking for all along. How did it feel when she got away?”
“Once again, like shit.” I say.
“Any guilt there?” Dr. B says.
“Excuse me?” I say.
“Well, if you didn’t have sex with her, maybe you wouldn’t have been so distracted.” Dr. B says, “Maybe you would have realized there was something off about her.”
“You have got to be the worst psychiatrist on the planet.” I say.
“Your defense mechanisms are advanced.” Dr. B says. “But let me remind you, I don’t care how many connections you have, I will make sure you never work as an FBI agent again if you do not open up to me.”
“Why do you hate me so much?” I ask.
“I don’t hate you John.” Dr. B says, “I just cannot let you put the lives of civilians and fellow detectives in danger.”
“So you blame me for Lucy’s death is that it?” I ask, “You think if it wasn’t for me talking her into jumping out of that plane she would still be alive.”
“No John, I don’t blame you.” Dr. B says, “I know you loved Lucy. I know if you had any inclination that something like that would have happened you would have been the first to take her place.”
“So why are you talking like I’m a bad omen to the team?” I say.
“On the contrary, I think what you bring to this unit, no one else does, and that is the precise reason why I am pushing you so much.” Dr. B says, “This unit needs you. Not the half with it or blackouts you, but the best of you.”
I guess that’s exactly what I needed to hear because I told Dr. B everything. I told her about the nightmares that I have every time I sleep. How I would see Lucy fall to the ground and how there was always so much blood everywhere, but no body. I told her how I see Rebecca everywhere and even though I know it is not her, I still get suspicious and approach the person I think is her. I tell her how I do blame myself for Lucy’s death. I also told her about all my research on the company who hosted the experiments they call, the sixth hell and how I always come up empty. Towards the end of our talk Dr. B gets a call from Captain Philips.
“Hey Captain, he’s right here…Yes, I understand. Well it’s like you said…We definitely have more work to do, but he’s ready….okay….only thing, I want him to get a full blood work done… I know he got one when he got back, but I want to run more specific tests…Okay great. Yes, I’ll tell him. Goodbye.” Dr. B hangs up the phone. She looks at me but says nothing.
“Well?” I say.
“He wants you to come in right away.” Dr. B says.
“What happen? Did they find the killer?” I ask.
“No John, unfortunately not.” Dr. B says, “There was another baby found dead.”
“Damn.” I say, “Okay, I have to go.”
“Wait, John.” Dr. B says, “There’s more.”
“What?” I ask.
Dr. B looks at her feet then says, “There were two babies John. One was dead, wrapped and put in a basket, like the others. And the other baby…the other baby was alive, John.”
