WDDIJ Reflection

Bet you thought I was gone for good?

Happy 2 year anniversary to Words Don’t Do it Justice. I came back for this special occasion just to share with you all some thoughts. It was a wild ride writing for WDDIJ, even if I wasn’t around the longest or anything – it gave me an outlet to express my ideas and opinions to an audience, something I had never really had before. It proved to me that I could actually go out there and put my thoughts into writing and that people would actually give a damn as to what I had to say.

Sure, everyone else around here had way more interesting content to bring to the table but I thought I did the best I could. Ruthless always manages to attract interesting talent to himself, even in the days before WDDIJ it was like that. I enjoyed my entire time there, and I hope you enjoyed me as well. It was fun trying to find something to talk about, something to hopefully shed light on for those unaware. I talked a lot about the Middle East during my time there but that is because it was something that was always kind of personal to me. A lot of people have the entirely wrong idea about Islam, and as a historian it makes me cringe when people act like the Middle East was this savage land that we should just carpet bomb. Islam is so much more than what the Media wants you to believe, and while I am not a Muslim myself, I hold their religion in deep regard and some of the nicest and most selfless individuals I have met have been Muslims.

They have their bad apples, but you should not let the radical extremists color your judgment of them. My father would tell me of his time in Iraq and Afghanistan and how the average Muslims would tell them about how Bin Laden and the terrorists had gotten everything wrong, and that what they did was not Islam and was not in line with Islam.

“It’s all wrong,” my Dad quoted one of his workers as saying. The time my father spent over there is part of the reason that I decided to dig into it, I wanted to know more about the time he spent over there. So, I hope I didn’t bore you all too much with my ramblings. As for me? Well, I might come back to WDDIJ in the future if my life ever winds down. Right now I’m grinding full-speed ahead in an accelerated college program. Eight week term after eight week term with only short breaks in between. Besides that, I am also a self-published author and am currently working on my own Historical Fantasy novel, all of which wouldn’t have been possible without WDDIJ. WDDIJ gave me the confidence I needed to get out there and put my thoughts into writing, to make them open to the public instead of just keeping them to myself. I have a mouth now, thanks to  THE Ruthless Wonder and Words Don’t Do It Justice.

Weekend With Ruthless: Happy Birthday REIGN!

Bloody Justice

Now some may say “My that’s a specific topic for a weekend with ruthless post.” Don’t worry it was just to make sure everywhere you share this post is a Happy Birthday to our wonderful writer Reign. Y’all know what she’s meant to WDDIJ. I don’t even need to explain again. But… Reign Appreciation!

Now back to your regularly scheduled Weekend Ramble

Why are geeks and Nerds so damned annoying these days?

You might remember that previously I’ve run pieces on the complex relationship between myself and the geek and nerd community. This comes to mind.  Also this comes to mind. Most certainly you remember this piece and of course this one. You could come to the conclusion if that was all your read of me, that I somehow hate the culture I once considered myself truly a part of. But few things are farther from the truth. The reality is I distance myself often to get perspective. To be objective. And above all to get free of the stupid echo chamber that develops no matter what side you take in the random intra sub culture conflicts that today pop up with names like GamerGate.

You might notice our newest writer The 9 to 5 Gamer himself Bami O is the one exclusively covering that matter. For good reason. I’m not a gamer geek. I’m not even an ex Nintendo Nerd (#TeamSega). So as usual I leave those matters to those who have the right mind for them. Also stay tuned for big news regarding Mr. 9to5 and the WDDIJ network. BIG NEWS. Anyway. I’ve spent the last couple of weeks watching commenting, and in some cases engaging in the conversations that pop up in some geek and nerd centric communities. Both on Facebook and in Forums. I haven’t popped into the realm of reddit because I hear enough horror stories.

One thing that I do notice is a lot more conflict on things that don’t ultimately make the community stronger. What do I mean? Well there is always going to be some pushing and shoving between people who bring up gender equality, racial equality and sexual orientation as it relates to games, and the people who don’t want to deal with it. But I have noticed a lot lately that people are bringing up these issues, not to head towards solutions, but to browbeat anyone who disagrees. What do I mean? When you call out developers for not having enough black women in games in a facebook group with only the most scant of possibilities for a game maker to be on them, you really are just trying to see who will disagree with you.

And this style of interaction is everywhere. It isn’t just in the geeks and nerds online. It is often in the classrooms, and bars, and social gatherings of completely non-geek affiliated people. So if geeks are smarter, why do they do this stupid thing? I don’t really have an answer for it. I genuinely can’t grasp why they’ve gotten so unaware of themselves. And the sad part is this is not the only annoyance. Nor is it the greatest one.

For me the greatest annoyance lately is the so called “real fans” issue. Known to the philosophy majors and english majors as the No real scotsman logical fallacy, this shit is everywhere. No real fan of transformers likes Micheal Bay’s movies. No real fan of comics liked Watchmen. Real fans hate Teen Titans Go. Real fans stand up for this or that, or the third thing we forgot. It is a plague on my mental faculties. The things I expect and deal with from the non-nerd masses were supposed to be far more rare among the intellectual elite. But the same crap comes. And whether it is White Knight based simp attitudes, Neanderthal

And whether it is White Knight based simp attitudes, Neanderthal Psuedo-Macho bullshit, Sociopath Fem dominant feminism, or Stupidly cautious Conservative feminine traditionalism, it doesn’t go away. Hell Patricia Arquette, Michelle Rodriguez, Neil Patrick Harris, Terrance Howard, and fucking Bill O’Reilly aren’t even getting covered by me on this Weekend Piece because the geek reactions to them and the stupid infighting is so annoying. Annoying enough that I don’t even openly refer to myself as an ex nerd or ex geek anymore. I’ve taken the Rae Sremmurd approach of just saying “I like what I like” and tossing in a Kanye shrug. Think about how terrifying that is.

The more intelligent you are, the more you should drive the conversation to better solutions in my book. My idea? For now support things like Wolf-PAC and MAYDAY-PAC. By getting the money influence out of politics and supporting the right candidates until then, a lot of the problems in geek and nerd culture can be solved, or directly addressed. Taking the hands on approach with things you want changed. If Cosplayers can get cons to voluntarily adopted anti-harassment rules written by a non-lawyer, if LoL players can convince the devs to ban abusive players, then you should be doing what is needed to make the change you want to see, happen.

Hate the movie roles? Make some movies. Hate the gender roles in games? Make some games or support some game makers. Hate the way Law and Order, and movies like Gamer portray you in public? How about you help me build a PAC to run the attack for you? More on that later. For now though. Support your own. Help build them up. Go tell young school age girls about STEM positions. Go talk to young boys about how they handle growing up without being patronizing. Go check out OtaKast Radio Network, 9to5 Gamer, 314 Publishing, Imperial Dreams Productions, and all of our partners and friends in the links to the side. But most of all Share Words Don’t Do It Justice with everyone you know. Why? Because I mean it when I say Hot Topics, Cold Analysis. We turn our keyboards and posts at everyone. No one gets a pass just because they like us. The most objective analysis of subjective material on the internet. Lead by YOUR favorite Super Villain. Almost 2 years in and still nothing’s changed. So think about what you’re doing. And to the geeks and nerds don’t get all in your feels because I called you out today. I could have gone much longer but Words Don’t Do It Justice!

Ruthless Grab bag: A Prelude to tomorrow

A Prelude to tomorrow

Tomorrow I’ll be back for a second piece on voting. But today I wanted to give you a bit of my more normal blogging. Things have been tight and contested around the home of your favorite super villain, and it has kept me from going at some things that have come up. So let’s start getting into them with a nice grab bag.

John Grisham is an idiot, and I’m weary of him and other idiot old white men

So I want to address this now because I’m a person who has talked at length about how much I read and that I’ve read every one of his books including Playing for Pizza(Yes, yes I did). As a reader of his books I was actually pretty shocked by the comments. But as someone waiting to hear the magic words that I can be sworn in as an attorney I was disgusted. Look folks there is just no sensible way to excuse what he said. For those that don’t know Grisham said this while defending a friend who had been convicted of having child pornography.

“We have prisons now filled with guys my age. Sixty-year-old white men in prison who have never harmed anybody, would never touch a child. But they got online one night and started surfing around, probably had too much to drink or whatever, and pushed the wrong buttons, went too far and got into child porn. I have no sympathy for real pedophiles. But so many of these guys do not deserve harsh prison sentences, and that’s what they’re getting. They haven’t hurt anybody, ok? They deserve some type of punishment, whatever. But ten years in prison? A friend of mine, ten years ago, was drinking. His drinking was out of control. And he went to a website—it was labeled, 16-year-old wannabe hookers, or something, some stupid website. And it said, 16-year-old girls. So he went there. Downloaded some stuff. It was 16-year-old girls who looked 30. You know, they were all dressed up and whatever. He shouldn’t have done it, it was stupid. But it wasn’t 10-year-old boys and he didn’t touch anything. And golly, a week later there was a knock on the door. FBI. And it was a sting set up by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to catch people—sex offenders. And he went to prison for three years.”

– John Grisham

Now let’s look at that for a second or two. His friend, who’s readmission to the bar Grisham backed, was on a website labelled 16 year old hookers. And viewed and downloaded video and or pictures of 16 year old girls. And he doesn’t think that the 3 year sentence was right. Further, he doesn’t think they are quote “real” pedophiles. Now you aren’t going to get me to spend much time dealing with the US prison system in a positive light. Part of that is that we allow for profit prisons. Part of that is we have a penal system based on severity punishment instead of rehabilitation, so we just make better criminals instead of making less of them. But if there is a group who needs to realize the depths of their depravity it is this lot. And like a few people have mentioned I’m concerned what might be on his computer. But to put a bow on this and give you perspective, the friend he was talking about? Yeah he said he deserved the punishment he received. NEXT TOPIC!

Lena Dunham(And I promise unless something becomes important this will be the only time I talk about her in a blog post)

So I ran across an article talking about this book Lena Dunham has out in stores and I was a bit bothered by the idea that she feels so comfortable with the story it told. I was even more bothered at her response to being called out on it. But I can’t say I was surprised when she was later defended by her throngs of supporters. For those who don’t know Ms Dunham details…You know what? Just read this link I’ll wait a bit for you…

“I shared a bed with my sister, Grace, until I was seventeen years old. She was afraid to sleep alone and would begin asking me around 5:00 P.M. every day whether she could sleep with me. I put on a big show of saying no, taking pleasure in watching her beg and sulk, but eventually I always relented. Her sticky, muscly little body thrashed beside me every night as I read Anne Sexton, watched reruns of SNL, sometimes even slipped my hand into my underwear to figure some stuff out. Grace had the comforting, sleep-inducing properties of a hot-water bottle or a cat.”

You done? Okay so in that snippet she is talking about when she is 7 and her sister is 1 and 2 years old. In a piece not included this behavior apparently continued until she was 17. Both the sexual and non-sexual gratification of herself through what she did or  coerced out of her sister. But as you can see, the indie darling responded to someone calling her out on this disturbing issue by saying is wrong with us. And calling her detractors the ones with the problem. It is interesting that she has a problem with people calling her a sexual predator when in the book she does the same but think about that later I have stuff to continue to on her.

This will inevitably piss off more of our readers but I don’t find her particularly interesting. And I think her show is more whitewashed NYC bullshit. Don’t worry, I know you just rage stomped your keyboard to call me names. And I’m not done. So this constant trend of HBO and Showtime to do “white people problems” shows(Credit: Cracked.com’s After hours), means that shows like hers get picked up and shows like Treme don’t get to stick around. I’m not okay with that, but that could be an entirely different blog post. Her show thrives on white girl awkwardness and her being the most likely of the supposed “unlikely” advocates for feminism and body acceptance. And as the site’s resident fat guy I’m pretty sure I can take shots at this second one. She has said over and over that she shows herself naked over and over because people tell her she shouldn’t. That’s her brand of feminism, and acceptance. Fine. Guess who doesn’t give a single fuck? You guessed it. ME!

Where I have a problem is the horrid character arcs, and missue of the randomly appearing POCs on the show. Chief among these Donald Glover. Why? Because here you have an actor who has cred with comedy, and more serious fare who you’ve decided to have play against type as a soft-spoken black republican law student. PERFECT!  What happens? No build up, no interaction with most of the cast, no real time on the show, some faux outrage, and gone. Dude hasn’t even been back on the show since then to randomly give her shit. I was convinced into giving her show a chance by that appearance. And because of it, I was done. It was as forced as her comments on race. So whitewash NYC, have no thought about the things you claim to do. But people should forgive you cause Childish Gambino once came on to be a fetishized black male sex partner? Pathetic. I hope the show gets cancelled after low ratings from all this. Don’t you love these Grab Bags? NEXT TOPIC!

Dear Stupid People(I thought about calling this in defense of WDDIJ)

So Apparently Reign’s piece The Letter Series: Dear White People still seems to be ruffling feathers for calling out white people. And apparently my vocal support of the film Dear White People has people calling me a reverse racist. Now I won’t dare address the idea that you people read WDDIJ and didn’t notice the piece about the difference between a bigot and a racist. But exactly when did this site’s readers become so blind to ignore reality? Has my podcast vacation truly been that devastating(Don’t worry it’ll be back soon) Look I’m not going to give this much time. But If you’ve become so disillusioned that you thought I, or indeed ANY writer on WDDIJ were going to back off of calling out people who are particularly antagonistic to the human experiment…well I won’t miss you when you leave. White, black, tan, Purple, green, American, Chinese, Japanese, Arab, Latino, German, Dutch, I really don’t care what you ID as. Reign’s letter series took on everyone. And I’ve never held back on any Ethnic Classification including my own. Now I have a lot more to say but that’s for tomorrow besides…WORDS DON’T DO IT JUSTICE!
