And now we come to…the end of an era

Today, oddly enough was supposed to be the pay off FINALLY for a number of posts about relationships that I thought might be better than all my previous ruthless on relationships post. And indeed I’ll get to that later.

Today is a day I bring us to a place I knew could happen, but was happy every time it didn’t. Today we end the hour for the last time. What do I mean? Today is the beginning of a goodbye party. For this blog. Oh it will continue to exist, but a transition is afoot. And so with all transitions, some things remain the same, while other change or are left behind.

If you would have told me 3 years ago as I was studying for the bar that we would be here I would be shocked. But if you would have told me that we would get here after 450 thousand views I’d also be shocked so much attention happened. Words Don’t Do It Justice started as an idea, a bit of fun, and a lot of me. I have buried hatchets with enemies because of this blog, reconnected with old friends, and made new ones because of this blog, found meaning in the midst of my own personal depression because of this place. I have consumed it, and let it consume me. I love it. But loving this blog means knowing what to do. And taking a good long look I know the thing to do is let it go.

But I said this was transition not destruction.

And indeed it is. I’ll be taking Words Don’t Do It Justice away from our blogging past into a show based future. For me, the question was one of logistics. Was it better to end everything and walk away from these years of effort, or find a way to keep the place alive in the hearts of all of you who have supported us? I choose to believe that you will keep supporting us, and I chose to keep this place alive in a new way.

That means giving you what we planned. Give No Quarter, The Wrath of Ruthless, and Words Don’t Do It Justice are the three pillars of Ruthless Radio. 3 shows with different formats that bring you many of the topics you might see written about here, but in a new form and with some new and old faces/voices. Over the next few weeks as we ready to for the relaunch of Words Don’t Do It Justice as a podcast, you’ll get to read some farewells from various alums, and hear from the incoming folks for these shows. You’ll also see the Words Don’t Do It Justice site itself undergo various changes. With plenty of hard work, luck, and you listening in, I hope to earn your trust for these new shows, and continue to hold our interest.

SO! What about Weekend’s Don’t Do It Justice?

Well I’m happy to say our little casual interest site is growing well. And it is going to continue. We had a nice response to the sample chapter from Project 13, and now that game of thrones is done you’ll see a lot of other reviews, news, and related content there. Our gamers are doing their thing, and if Vantinel’s CEO appearance is any indication of commitment, we will only continue to grow over there.

As I end for now I just want to say thank you, and of course to keep watching what we do. But more than that, thank you for being a force for us. We continued to push because you were there with us. 100,000 visitors, 450,000 views, and 3 years of growth, While things must change, I am glad to have made it to this point. A point that let’s me look back and say that YOU made us more than I imagined. And though Words Don’t Do It Justice…Thank you.

Founder of Words Don’t Do It Justice

And now… at the end of the hour

This week we debuted a brand new podcast with a livestream. We said goodbye to one of the founders. We tackled coons, and hoteps. As well as assault, and the HIV & AIDS treatment drug Truvada.

I skipped a couple lines to let that sink in.

When this started I literally just wanted to take my usual facebook ranting to a website. I figured it would be like the old days of my Xanga page. Now, now I deal with potential sponsors, have production meetings, worry about our average listening and reading time, and look for brand expansion.

I remind you, I was so bored in the last semester of law school I decided to make a blog to archive the things I would normally rant about on Facebook.

So you can understand that having gone from that place to now is rather…amazing if I’m honest. I had no idea. We’ve added and lost people over that time. But more than their contributions or mine, we’ve gotten to know a lot of you. As of this writing, 92,000 of you have come to get to know us over these 3 years of Words Don’t Do It Justice. And you must like it here, because you’ve dropped in 302,000 times.

That is astounding. That is epic. And to think that it has all come before we put up a single ad, before we shilled a single product, without a marketing team, and mostly from the effort of our authors, and their friends and family who have additionally believed in us and shared us with other people.  I can’t tell you enough thank you for all you’ve done and continue to do. It really has made the difference.

What that means is even what I’ve done in the past year isn’t enough. I have to do more. And I am. While we lost a podcast co-host today, I’m proud to say we gained 2 new ones for our show Give No Quarter. While we have Reason on break for a while, I’m happy to say we will be launching Weekends Don’t Do It Justice as its own site ( Look for a review of a hilariously bad movie coming over there soon from me.

Heck, go buy a shirt, phone case, hoodie or tank.

I’m also happy to say that I’m teaming with Mr. 9 to 5 gamer himself Bami O to open a new gaming site and channel called “Save State Society” ( here soon as well. And we’re open with some great games and reviews. But that is going to take a lot to talk about, and I’ve got work to do there.

You’re here reading because this is about Words Don’t Do it Justice. The granddaddy of them all. Okay, the origin of them all. Three years in, and even though health wise I’ve dealt with issues. Professional life wise, I’ve had great forward steps but also set backs. Heck life in general being strange. After all that I’m proud of where we are. Where you’ve brought us. And so for the third time we come to the end of the hour. Where I say thank you without any reservations. Where for the third time ever, I get to step out of my role as Head Blogger, Editor, Podcast host, Lucremo, THE Ruthless Wonder, and everything that comes with it, and instead just talk to you as Matt Williams. We have a few reflection pieces and some alumni coming back to give us a piece. And we are going to celebrate all the way to my personal birthday on March 14th. But right now I’m just going to end by saying thank you all for bringing me and us from where we were to where we are and pushing us forward to where we are going next. As always Words Don’t Do YOU Justice.

Words Don’t Do It Justice: YOU are Forty Thousand Strong on our 2nd Anniversary

Just a reminder where we started.

Just a reminder where we started.

Words Don’t Do It Justice

“It was all a dream.

I used read word up magazine.”

I could keep going with that, but really I don’t feel like quoting too much of anyone else today. So let me address this with the style most comforting.

When this all began it was an idea.

The thought that we could give the world something in this blog that would be read by our friends, maybe a few co-workers and classmates. And every once in a while I’d get to deal with the issues I have to face on a daily basis by just ranting into a text window for 30 minutes to an hour and let the world read. Certainly if we accomplished that I would have called this a successful idea and when the view dwindled I’d close it up and say I had a good time.

But that isn’t what you did. And I say that isn’t what YOU did, because it is true. You are the reason this fun time didn’t turn into just another thing I used to do. YOU made it worth it to find Rufus, Ronin, Roddo, Rebellionista, Realistic Royalty, Princess Devy, Reign, The Revanchist, The Radical Ref, Carl McPhail, Xion, Driving Misty, Rhapsodic, Reason, Kudo, Rhythmic Journey, Revolution In A Jar, causeandeffect88, Bami O, Render Verdicts, Ruminated Thoughts, Keith Labell, Smooth Phuzion, Bree the V, TEH Bobbo, and all the people who wanted to commit but just didn’t have the time to write, be on the podcast, contribute music, or be interviewed.

That wasn’t just me plodding through on my own. That was you reading. That was you sharing. That was YOU telling the world our little corner of the internet was worth checking out. in the first year we did 3500 views. In 2 years we have done 40,000! Because of all of you. And now things are possible that weren’t not long ago. YOU made this happen. People asked me when I started what I expected. They asked me what I wanted. I just wanted people to listen to my thoughts sometimes. It was so simple back then. Now? Now I want the sky and everything beyond. lol just kidding.

Now I want to give you more of what you come here for. So covering Gaming, and other topics, We’re proud to announce that Nine To Five Gamer will be joining us run by Bami O. Look for the official page as well as forums soon. You’re going to read pieces from many of our alumni writers. And that long-awaited revamp/update to the site. I can’t promise you we’ll turn into a Super Villain run Huffington Post by tomorrow. Heck I can’t even promise that by next year. But I can promise we will keep hitting these hot topics with our cold analysis. I can promise we are committed to giving you what you came here for. And I can promise you I WILL NEVER FORGET what drives Words Don’t Do It Justice. Because what drives us is YOU!

My humanity wants to cry by my Super Villainy is smiling too hard and is too excited. Thank you all. THANK YOU. Every super fan. Every random reader Every casual person who checked us out a few times or just once. THANK YOU FOR ALL OF THIS FROM ALL OF US! We couldn’t have done all this without you. Words Do Not Do YOU Justice!

A Ruthless Grab Bag: Beefs, Backlash, and Breaking Free

One of the things I often stay far away from is commentary on internet battles. But given the nature of some I find this is a bit of a necessity. Over the last few weeks I’ve watched as some of my favorite internet personalities got embroiled in conflict with people they shouldn’t. Tariq Nasheed going at Tommy Sotomayor again, whatever is going on between The Escapist and 2 of the 3 reasons I went to that website, and easily my second favorite Game of Thrones commentator Preston Jacobs versus what seems to be History of Westeros, and a bunch of angry reddit folks.

I try to keep Words Don’t Do It Justice out of my personal affairs, including my continued war against the right of Raiders fans to procreate and own property. But these particular conflicts bother me for another reason. In the case of The Escapist I really don’t understand why they’ve gone with the idea of ending relationships with 3 of the best web series they have in Jim Sterling’s Jimquisition, and Bob Chipman’s Escape to the movies and The Big Picture. In the case of Tariq and Tommy, it is the kind of stupid bickering and bullshit that is sadly common.

But the conflict is a deeper version of that same story of hating the new guy who made it and you perceive as bigger than you suddenly. I used to never understand why some people just entirely ignore attacks on them. This pointless conflict has done exactly that for me. I get and have gotten what I want. Even if tomorrow someone tried to come at me for something, I just don’t care enough about them to go back and forth. Of all people Chris Brown said recently “Talking about him doesn’t make me money.” I wish both would take that position.

In the case of The attacks on Preston…well my annoyance is all about overpuffed senses of self. I’ve never seen so many copyright attorney’s who got their degrees on reddit and youtube. It takes a lot for me to care about conflicts like that, but  watching Preston Jacobs channel get taken down, and his videos getting flagged reminded me of the other reason we’ve moved from to our own hosting and using just WP software. Simply put there is a deeply stupid section of the internet that will always annoy you if you run a site open for comments. Here I can filter them out easier. Not so easy for Preston on youtube, so I was glad when he got his channel back.

I’m going to quickly court some backlash myself by saying very simply I’m always going to enjoy it when people try to “set me straight” on certain issues. And that doesn’t have any restrictions. Pro-blacks rocking weave and using facebook on their iPhone. White males from rich suburbs who’s biggest struggle was having a prick for an older brother. Rams fans. Anyone who doesn’t have a JD who talks about family law. You’re all part of the idiots as well and hunting season is coming. Backlash gets me alert in the morning and whitens my teeth, FIGHT ME!

Breaking Free:

Now this is what you really came for. What is being broken free from? Who is breaking free? You are. Over the next few weeks we have the 2nd anniversary, we have some more debuts, and a big shakeup. I can’t promise you will like all of it. But I can promise you will see the next evolution of Words Don’t Do It Justice. But I don’t want to ruin the surprises. We are going to a new place. We’re transcending where we are. And almost 40 thousand of your visits are the reason why. See you soon. Because…Words Don’t Do It Justice!

Ruthless Grab bag: A Prelude to tomorrow

A Prelude to tomorrow

Tomorrow I’ll be back for a second piece on voting. But today I wanted to give you a bit of my more normal blogging. Things have been tight and contested around the home of your favorite super villain, and it has kept me from going at some things that have come up. So let’s start getting into them with a nice grab bag.

John Grisham is an idiot, and I’m weary of him and other idiot old white men

So I want to address this now because I’m a person who has talked at length about how much I read and that I’ve read every one of his books including Playing for Pizza(Yes, yes I did). As a reader of his books I was actually pretty shocked by the comments. But as someone waiting to hear the magic words that I can be sworn in as an attorney I was disgusted. Look folks there is just no sensible way to excuse what he said. For those that don’t know Grisham said this while defending a friend who had been convicted of having child pornography.

“We have prisons now filled with guys my age. Sixty-year-old white men in prison who have never harmed anybody, would never touch a child. But they got online one night and started surfing around, probably had too much to drink or whatever, and pushed the wrong buttons, went too far and got into child porn. I have no sympathy for real pedophiles. But so many of these guys do not deserve harsh prison sentences, and that’s what they’re getting. They haven’t hurt anybody, ok? They deserve some type of punishment, whatever. But ten years in prison? A friend of mine, ten years ago, was drinking. His drinking was out of control. And he went to a website—it was labeled, 16-year-old wannabe hookers, or something, some stupid website. And it said, 16-year-old girls. So he went there. Downloaded some stuff. It was 16-year-old girls who looked 30. You know, they were all dressed up and whatever. He shouldn’t have done it, it was stupid. But it wasn’t 10-year-old boys and he didn’t touch anything. And golly, a week later there was a knock on the door. FBI. And it was a sting set up by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to catch people—sex offenders. And he went to prison for three years.”

– John Grisham

Now let’s look at that for a second or two. His friend, who’s readmission to the bar Grisham backed, was on a website labelled 16 year old hookers. And viewed and downloaded video and or pictures of 16 year old girls. And he doesn’t think that the 3 year sentence was right. Further, he doesn’t think they are quote “real” pedophiles. Now you aren’t going to get me to spend much time dealing with the US prison system in a positive light. Part of that is that we allow for profit prisons. Part of that is we have a penal system based on severity punishment instead of rehabilitation, so we just make better criminals instead of making less of them. But if there is a group who needs to realize the depths of their depravity it is this lot. And like a few people have mentioned I’m concerned what might be on his computer. But to put a bow on this and give you perspective, the friend he was talking about? Yeah he said he deserved the punishment he received. NEXT TOPIC!

Lena Dunham(And I promise unless something becomes important this will be the only time I talk about her in a blog post)

So I ran across an article talking about this book Lena Dunham has out in stores and I was a bit bothered by the idea that she feels so comfortable with the story it told. I was even more bothered at her response to being called out on it. But I can’t say I was surprised when she was later defended by her throngs of supporters. For those who don’t know Ms Dunham details…You know what? Just read this link I’ll wait a bit for you…

“I shared a bed with my sister, Grace, until I was seventeen years old. She was afraid to sleep alone and would begin asking me around 5:00 P.M. every day whether she could sleep with me. I put on a big show of saying no, taking pleasure in watching her beg and sulk, but eventually I always relented. Her sticky, muscly little body thrashed beside me every night as I read Anne Sexton, watched reruns of SNL, sometimes even slipped my hand into my underwear to figure some stuff out. Grace had the comforting, sleep-inducing properties of a hot-water bottle or a cat.”

You done? Okay so in that snippet she is talking about when she is 7 and her sister is 1 and 2 years old. In a piece not included this behavior apparently continued until she was 17. Both the sexual and non-sexual gratification of herself through what she did or  coerced out of her sister. But as you can see, the indie darling responded to someone calling her out on this disturbing issue by saying is wrong with us. And calling her detractors the ones with the problem. It is interesting that she has a problem with people calling her a sexual predator when in the book she does the same but think about that later I have stuff to continue to on her.

This will inevitably piss off more of our readers but I don’t find her particularly interesting. And I think her show is more whitewashed NYC bullshit. Don’t worry, I know you just rage stomped your keyboard to call me names. And I’m not done. So this constant trend of HBO and Showtime to do “white people problems” shows(Credit:’s After hours), means that shows like hers get picked up and shows like Treme don’t get to stick around. I’m not okay with that, but that could be an entirely different blog post. Her show thrives on white girl awkwardness and her being the most likely of the supposed “unlikely” advocates for feminism and body acceptance. And as the site’s resident fat guy I’m pretty sure I can take shots at this second one. She has said over and over that she shows herself naked over and over because people tell her she shouldn’t. That’s her brand of feminism, and acceptance. Fine. Guess who doesn’t give a single fuck? You guessed it. ME!

Where I have a problem is the horrid character arcs, and missue of the randomly appearing POCs on the show. Chief among these Donald Glover. Why? Because here you have an actor who has cred with comedy, and more serious fare who you’ve decided to have play against type as a soft-spoken black republican law student. PERFECT!  What happens? No build up, no interaction with most of the cast, no real time on the show, some faux outrage, and gone. Dude hasn’t even been back on the show since then to randomly give her shit. I was convinced into giving her show a chance by that appearance. And because of it, I was done. It was as forced as her comments on race. So whitewash NYC, have no thought about the things you claim to do. But people should forgive you cause Childish Gambino once came on to be a fetishized black male sex partner? Pathetic. I hope the show gets cancelled after low ratings from all this. Don’t you love these Grab Bags? NEXT TOPIC!

Dear Stupid People(I thought about calling this in defense of WDDIJ)

So Apparently Reign’s piece The Letter Series: Dear White People still seems to be ruffling feathers for calling out white people. And apparently my vocal support of the film Dear White People has people calling me a reverse racist. Now I won’t dare address the idea that you people read WDDIJ and didn’t notice the piece about the difference between a bigot and a racist. But exactly when did this site’s readers become so blind to ignore reality? Has my podcast vacation truly been that devastating(Don’t worry it’ll be back soon) Look I’m not going to give this much time. But If you’ve become so disillusioned that you thought I, or indeed ANY writer on WDDIJ were going to back off of calling out people who are particularly antagonistic to the human experiment…well I won’t miss you when you leave. White, black, tan, Purple, green, American, Chinese, Japanese, Arab, Latino, German, Dutch, I really don’t care what you ID as. Reign’s letter series took on everyone. And I’ve never held back on any Ethnic Classification including my own. Now I have a lot more to say but that’s for tomorrow besides…WORDS DON’T DO IT JUSTICE!
