Decorum Deficiency Disorder: Redundant Much?

B + Y Broken RecordListening to this one–now months later–I feel myself getting just as pissed off as I was the morning I recorded it. First, its been months now, as opposed to weeks, but I have read over several of my pieces–and other WDDIJ pieces–since this was recorded. There are more than a few recurring themes. It seems like everywhere I turn, I read and see more of the same. It’s like the world has become a broken record. Police abusing power, people with guns killing people without them, protestors protest injustices, the public moves on to the next big thing, rinse, lather, repeat. I guess that’s why they call it a “news cycle:” because it just keeps going… a seemingly endless cycle of redundant happenings.

I’m still tired of repeating myself. However, someone new might be listening or reading. Record Age PassedI might say things differently or use a different example that drives the point home for the same person who read me but didn’t see what the big deal was the last time I said it. I’ll never know who is listening when, or if it’s finally their turn to legitimately understand my point. So I can’t stop commenting on the issues, regardless of how redundant I think it has become. The conversation is necessary. All of the conversations are necessary. Thus, I will continue harping on the selfish ass hats who insist on shooting up schools and movie theatres. I’ll continue ranting about how shitty the media–and really the world–is about properly representing people of color. I’ll keep sounding off at groups of people and large entities in angry letters. I will keep the lines of communication open.

Redundant = Fixing the RecordHowever, just having the conversation isn’t enough. There’s a reason I with “Do More, Require Better.” We have to Do More in an effort to make the differences necessary to effect them change we want to see in the world. We have to Require Better of ourselves and those around us because we are the summed total of every person, place and thing we encounter. Holding ourselves to high standards put us in a better position to lead by example.

So, here’s the question of this day: You with me?

Either way, the objective as always: Do More. Require Better.

Yes our Holiday Special is going to cover all of this.

Decorum Deficiency Disorder: Another One… A Letter to the Media

This week’s planned discussion is being preempted because another ass-hat with a gun decided that he wanted to die but that he wasn’t going to screaming, crying, and alone the way he came in. This is my appeal to the media.

Dear story tellers of the mainstream media;
Please don’t give this shit head even one more second of coverage. No interviews with neighbors or family members talking about how stressed or how he was such a nice guy. No commentary about his mental un-health. Nothing about his childhood, family history, or career. Let forget his name and let him fade into obscurity. May he be internet blacklisted; his facebook, twitter, instagram, linkedin… even those background check sites forget that he ever existed. I offer that sick fuck as tribute so that the next shit face who might be considering engaging in similar activities will know that he will not be awarded infamy for their misbehavior.

As for the victims and their families; let them mourn in peace. Don’t haunt them with questions and image of that murderer’s face every time they go to turn on the TV or scroll through their feeds and threads. Let them figure out how they might best be able to move forward without their loved ones. Let’s not re-victimize them by giving other sick fucks the opportunity to lend any form of support, especially in imitation.

Finally, if there is a hell beyond this Earthly plane, may he suffer the sounds of sitting on an airplane between twin babies crying to his left, and sloppy gum chewing on his right on a never-ending fight to nowhere.

Karma’s going to have to forgive these thoughts because this time I can’t Do More. I can only Require Better.

Sincerely,
Reign

Decorum Deficiency Disorder: Shut Up About the Fake Woman…hood Already

Apparently, this gender identity situation is a thing Trans - Laverne Coxthat actually requires words and attention, so I’ll start with a disclaimer: I believe that people should be allowed to be whomever and whatever they want to be as long as it doesn’t cause other people any actual harm. I’d want to say other living things s to include plant life and animals, the environment, etc, but I realize that there are very few things that we do as human beings that don’t harm all things in nature, so I have to keep it at people for realism’s sake. The popular claim that someone else’s choices or lifestyle has an impact on your personal life is not a form of “actual harm” as far as I’m concerned. That said, I’m sure I’ll still manage to piss off or offend someone. If that person is you, sorry, not sorry. My opinion can’t cause you any actual harm either. On to the off-pissing contest.

Mone Davis CoverThere’s something about being a woman, having survived my childhood, having overcome and risen above the expectations and lack there of… Something about being a woman makes me feel triumphant every time manage to put on my bra without getting it twisted and tangled… Remembering what it was like when I was still flat chested, knobby kneed, and curveless… Remembering the day I had to accept that I couldn’t play the way I used to, run as fast as I could when I was unencumbered… That time in the pool when the play fighting got too personal and I realized things would never be the same. The first time my thoughts and feelings were dismissed because I was “just being hormonal.” The fact that I made it through all of that; all the changes and growing pains is something I wear on my soul as a personal badge of honor because I know where I’ve been, and that if I can make through all that, I can make it through whatever’s coming next.

The first time I heard a gay man call another gay man “girl” I was taken aback; instantly incensed and permanently irritated. Sure he probably had earned his own struggle badge, but not the same one I did. Even if he had been teased about being effeminate his entire life, it wasn’t the same as being a girl and being automatically considered weaker, lesser, lower by simply having been born. How dare he think it ok to simply claim that title without having earned it? The gall and audacity of it… You can probably see where this is going.

So now, with the newly minted Miss Jenner having been awarded an actual badge of honor for choosing to be a woman openly… the people arguing how disgusting her choice is… the people who want to call her decision brave because it inspires so many to to make that decision for themselves… It pisses me off. Not because I think she should have stay miserable as a man and learned to deal or even just because she gets to wear the woman badge without having earned it. Its because she purchased her badge in every sense of the word. She won’t even suffer the way so many other trans-gendered people will and have because she after paying to become the woman she saw herself as, she’s getting to profit from it. She’s being praised as a hero and all she’s done is the same thing her step daughters and ex-wife have done; capitalize on attention that she doesn’t deserve. How dare people praise her for choosing to be a woman when so many of us who were born women have had to contend with glass ceilings, double standards, degradation, and all manner of unpleasantness by simple virtue of having been born to the female gender. Where’s the badge of honor for every woman who was raped or molested as a child just because she was a she? Why are we only now realizing that the negative connotation of any statement ending with “like a girl” is damaging and harmful? Why is being a girl only heroic and awesome when a man chooses to do it?

I’m sure it really sucks having been born with testes Like a Girl - Mia Hammwhen you’d rather have breasts. I’m sure Miss Jenner wouldn’t have opted for the full treatment of womanhood if it were available. I’m sure if fully functional ovaries and uterus, complete with periods, PMS, pregnancy, and impending menopause was an option, those boxes on the application would have been left blank. I’m happy that she gets to play dress-up with the best brands and finally gets to be the cover girl she’s always wanted to be, but I think its time we moved on from this. So what he decided to be a she. Good for her. Can we get back to Doing More and Requiring Better now?

Decorum Deficiency Disorder: Them Dresses Though… *Face Palm*

Let’s talk current events. Why… when there are so many more important things going on in the world worth discussing… is my Facebook feed full of posts about the dresses celebrities wore to their respective awards shows? Why are people really wasting energy asking entertainers to speak out about issues that have nothing to do with what we keep them around for: entertainment? Why are we looking to otherwise insignificant and irrelevant people for guidance on things that are very important and significant? Have we really become so… addicted to entertainment that we can’t even stand up for an issues without having to Kidding Meconsult our favorite sports personality or singer? Why the fuck should I care what Kobe Bryant has to say about what’s going on in Baltimore; are the heads of state in Baltimore big fans of his or something? How on God’s green Earth are Jennifer Lopez or Rihanna’s dresses going to make a difference in the economy or hell, just make my life better?

I can’t even begin to express my frustration at having to deviate from my time of mourning to remind you people that these people are just entertainers. We don’t pay them for their insight. We don’t pay them to teach our children right from wrong. They’re there to entertain us, and then move on with their lives, just as we are supposed to move on with ours. Just because we have access to random starlet No. 7’s life story in Wikipedia and her every thought on Twitter doesn’t mean that what she says or thinks should have any bearing on anything but her life. can she sing a song or play a role that helps to take my mind off my daily grind? Great! Then when she’s done, if she could just shut the fuck up and move on with her life, I’ll be more than happy to just move on with mine.

If you’re a parent concerned about the images your children see, do your damn job and censor that shit. Stop leaning on TV to raise and educate your kids. If you’re wondering why you have no control over your kid, or why they have no respect for your position of authority in your life, it’s because you’ve positioned yourself as little more than a food and entertainment dispenser. Let that sink in.

And before you start getting defensive, consider how many YouTube videos there are with kids jumping each other, angry rants delivered before a killing spree, youths having killed themselves because no one was there who could understand and help them through their struggle?

If you’re a socially conscious individual who for whatever reason believes that entertainers should weigh in on the issues… Stop. What happens when people like Kanye, Raven Simone, and Charles Barkley allow the truth of their perspective to ooze out of their mouths? You turn around and tell them to shut up. If you only want to hear what people have to say when they agree with you, then in addition to having a seat, you need to go back to elementary school where you were supposed to learn the lesson about people being different and having freedom of speech, and the right to their opinions. if you’re going to live in the land of butt hurt and salt, you should really just stick your own opinions. Do like the FOX News folks do and fabricate your own little world where the only truth that’s out there is yours. You want to hear a sport’s personality’s opinion on something? Ask Michael Jordan why he allows his sneakers to that probably cost 5 cents to manufacture cost $125 a pair. Ask him why, after the first death, did he not do something to protect his consumers… like making the sneakers more easily accessible to all youths by lowering the price. Why didn’t he make a public statement about that? Why wasn’t there a public outcry about his silence on something that actually was within his control? Oh, do we understand that he’s a businessman? Are we okay with his silence because he’s usually a really nice guy?

Ok, I think I’ve made my point. But just in case:
Even if original thought isn’t really a thing, and common sense isn’t common, its time we started thinking with our own brains instead of allowing the talking heads on TV to lead, control and distract us more than they already do. In short: Do More. Require Better… or shut the fuck up.

Words Don’t Do It Justice: YOU are Forty Thousand Strong on our 2nd Anniversary

Just a reminder where we started.

Just a reminder where we started.

Words Don’t Do It Justice

“It was all a dream.

I used read word up magazine.”

I could keep going with that, but really I don’t feel like quoting too much of anyone else today. So let me address this with the style most comforting.

When this all began it was an idea.

The thought that we could give the world something in this blog that would be read by our friends, maybe a few co-workers and classmates. And every once in a while I’d get to deal with the issues I have to face on a daily basis by just ranting into a text window for 30 minutes to an hour and let the world read. Certainly if we accomplished that I would have called this a successful idea and when the view dwindled I’d close it up and say I had a good time.

But that isn’t what you did. And I say that isn’t what YOU did, because it is true. You are the reason this fun time didn’t turn into just another thing I used to do. YOU made it worth it to find Rufus, Ronin, Roddo, Rebellionista, Realistic Royalty, Princess Devy, Reign, The Revanchist, The Radical Ref, Carl McPhail, Xion, Driving Misty, Rhapsodic, Reason, Kudo, Rhythmic Journey, Revolution In A Jar, causeandeffect88, Bami O, Render Verdicts, Ruminated Thoughts, Keith Labell, Smooth Phuzion, Bree the V, TEH Bobbo, and all the people who wanted to commit but just didn’t have the time to write, be on the podcast, contribute music, or be interviewed.

That wasn’t just me plodding through on my own. That was you reading. That was you sharing. That was YOU telling the world our little corner of the internet was worth checking out. in the first year we did 3500 views. In 2 years we have done 40,000! Because of all of you. And now things are possible that weren’t not long ago. YOU made this happen. People asked me when I started what I expected. They asked me what I wanted. I just wanted people to listen to my thoughts sometimes. It was so simple back then. Now? Now I want the sky and everything beyond. lol just kidding.

Now I want to give you more of what you come here for. So covering Gaming, and other topics, We’re proud to announce that Nine To Five Gamer will be joining us run by Bami O. Look for the official page as well as forums soon. You’re going to read pieces from many of our alumni writers. And that long-awaited revamp/update to the site. I can’t promise you we’ll turn into a Super Villain run Huffington Post by tomorrow. Heck I can’t even promise that by next year. But I can promise we will keep hitting these hot topics with our cold analysis. I can promise we are committed to giving you what you came here for. And I can promise you I WILL NEVER FORGET what drives Words Don’t Do It Justice. Because what drives us is YOU!

My humanity wants to cry by my Super Villainy is smiling too hard and is too excited. Thank you all. THANK YOU. Every super fan. Every random reader Every casual person who checked us out a few times or just once. THANK YOU FOR ALL OF THIS FROM ALL OF US! We couldn’t have done all this without you. Words Do Not Do YOU Justice!

Decorum Deficit Disorder: Get Off the Pot

I had a whole different topic picked out for this week, but someone told me I needed to stop paying attention to my feelings and get to work… to stop letting them see me sweat he said. I guess I have been sweating a lot in public lately. What can I say *shrug* It’s been hot in my kitchen.

… So instead we’re going to talk about mixed messages and indecision.

So there I was at work, deep in thought, awake, but not really, listening to the sounds and conversations around me, contemplating my next move. As I was drifting off into another flashback of memories from times I last made decisions and took action, I was interrupted by the fatherly voice of a new coworker and friend… Have you ever been asked a simple question that throws all of your psychic energy into overdrive?

I used to be really good at seeing a path and moving forward, now, not so much. I guess I’m getting old and nervous; now I stop to think and consider my moves like every decision is a critical move in a never-ending game of chess.

Life is not a game. It has a beginning and an end. Every moment of every day could be your last or it could be just another moment. Wasting time vacillating between decisions like you’re a character in some Shakespearean tragedy thinking Shit...“To move, or not to move…. to do or not to do… paper or plastic…” … Dude… Shit or get off the mother fucking pot. That was my message for the day, and in true Reign-esque fashion, I am sharing it with all of you. Whatever it is that you need to do to get to where you want to go, get on it. Eventually you’ll realized that the only person who is responsible for your current position in life is you. Absolutely, we are all the sum and total of every person and interaction, but the result is still ultimately a personal choice. You can bask in accomplishments that have long since passed, or you can move forward to your next goal. Will you be the high school quarterback who hasn’t been shit since high school still recounting stories from his glory days, or will you be the one still making moves, kicking ass, taking names, being the master of your own universe  in spite of anyone who says you can’t? These are choices.

It still makes me feel “some type of way” when I see, hear, or read things that say anything that’s wrong with your life is your fault; that isn’t completely true. Circumstances are often outside of our control, especially when they require input from other humans. Just to clarify, that isn’t what my friend said, but it is what I heard. What he actually said was something much closer to my being responsible for where I am, but instead of dwelling on the part of the message that doesn’t agree with me, I threw the salt over my shoulder and took what I needed. That’s the mixed part of the message. Indecision is about fear. When you send mixed messages out into the universe, that forces the universe to respond to whatever part of the message it prefers, regardless of your intent. So yes, we are responsible for the messages we send. We are responsible for our own actions. However, how those messages are received, interpreted, and the resulting reaction, not always about us. When you go into a job interview looking the part, saying all the right things and shaking all the right hands… is it your fault if the decision had already been made that you would not be the recipient of said job? When you meet someone for the first time, think you’re being pleasant and personable, but somehow that person leaves your interaction thinking negatively of you because you remind them of some jack ass they dealt with once upon a time, is that your fault? No. That’s about them. It isn’t your responsibility to know every factor and potential outcome… that’s chess, this is life. Life is long, short, unpredictable, and everyone knows what’s going to happen at the end. Let that sink in…

Remember that you are only responsible for your 50 percent. You have your own decisions to make, you have your own messages to send and receive. You have to master your universe while playing your role everyone else’s. Mistakes will be made. Lessons will be learned… Life will go on. Indecision will only leave you stagnant, mired in regrets, stuck in glory days long past wondering why things aren’t the way you want them to be. Make your moves with as much certainty as possible without fear of how things might-could turn out. Know that the only direction you can’t go in is backward. You can’t, or at least really shouldn’t take shit back. Shit and get off the fucking pot… and

Do more. Require Better.
